People Are Accusing Adam Levine Of Cultural Appropriation After He Showed Off His 'Corn Hawk'

Alright, so let's just get this out of the way: that corn hawk is hashtag tragic.

The internet is having a free-for all after Adam Levine debuted his "corn hawk," aka cornhows shaved into a mohawk.

Many users accused Levine of appropriation, while others accused him of committing crimes against fashion.

The corn hawk hit the internet via Instagram.

Adam Levine posted his new hairstyle to his Instagram story, dubbing it the "corn hawk."

From the front, it's really...not so bad? I mean, the discussion of appropriation aside, he's definitely had worse hair.

Mm, lemme show you the back, though.

You know how in Star Wars, you know someone is a Jedi-in-training by the long braid they have randomly growing next to their otherwise short hair?

Adam's braids look like he just started his Jedi training...yesterday.

Some people just straight-up don't like it.

I mean, this isn't the weirdest hairstyle he's ever rocked. Remember when he decided to bleach his hair?

I think he was aiming for platinum, but he landed closer to Guy Fieri.

Matt is so right!

Dreadlocks on white people is appropriation.

There's so many articles online outlining how harmful appropriation is.

As Maisha Z. Johnson put it, "A white woman is free to take on and take off the same hairstyle that a Black woman would be ostracized for."

I mean, Adam isn't wearing dreadlocks, but I thought I'd talk about it, anyway. Good effort, Matt!

Some of the Tweets were so brutal.

The simplicity of this roast is incredible. Maybe I laughed out loud, but you can't prove that.

I'm going to swap some of the roasts in between the appropriation talk, because we need a good balance of laughs and thoughtful analysis on racial inequality in America.

Cornrows are a polarizing issue.

Amandla Stenberg said it best:

"When you appropriate black features and culture but fail to use your position of power to help black Americans by directing attention towards your wigs instead of police brutality or racism," she wrote on Instagram.

That's why people don't like when white people wear cornrows. It's not a fashion statement.

Great tweet, great tweet.

Guys, remember when Joe Keery briefly changed his hair? And the whole internet lost their minds, because who is Joe Keery without his magnificent coif?

That was such a dark time.

Heated discussions were had.

Jane had a great point that eloquently laid out why a hairstyle is a big deal!

If you don't think it's appropriation, it might still be of use to read some of the other articles linked here to read up on how appropriation can be harmful.

Guys, this one broke me a little. The caption is fine, but the hashtag? That took me right out.

Remember what I said about those Star Wars Padawan braids? Right there. You can see what I mean right there, in all their stubby glory.

Even Perez Hilton got in on it.

People in his replies did not agree with him, however. Many said that Adam had the right to wear whatever hairstyle he wants.

Which is correct! If we lived in a perfect world, that is.

Brooke's mom better see this tweet.

Brooke, you're valid, you're doing great, and your Tweet is gold.

Maybe Adam is just bummed out that he's not doing this season of The Voice? Some people go through it via their hair, after all.

The debate around the appropriation had people on both sides.

Some people weren't sure if the cornrows were actual appropriation. Instead, they supported his choices, telling him to wear his hair however he wanted.

What do you think? Is this case different because he only has three?

But almost everyone was united on one thing...

The hair is tragic.

I don't think Adam is going through a midlife crisis, but I do think he does stuff like this to make headlines. You'll see why at the end of the article.

Yeah, this is gonna stick with me for a while.

Those small nubs at the back...I really will never be able to un-see them, will I?

I wonder what his hair looks like when it's not in cornrows? Or is it going to just stay braided until the rest of it grows out?

Don't picture that. It's a bad idea.

Okay...maybe a point got made here.

This...might be the whole issue when it comes to celebrities continuing to do inflammatory things.

The problem with living in our current world is that everything is a publicity stunt. I blame Kris Jenner. (Don't kill me, Kris.)
