Dozens Of Celebs Are Coming To Ellen DeGeneres's Defense After Criticism For Sitting With George W. Bush

Ellen Degeneres and George W. Bush sat next to each other at an NFL game on Sunday, and the internet had some less than kind thoughts about this unlikely friendship. But after Ellen defended herself on her show, celebrities have been praising her for standing up for herself.

If you happened to be watching the Dallas Cowboys vs. Greenbay Packers game on Sunday, you may have spotted Ellen DeGeneres sitting beside former president, George Bush.

The pair looked like they were having a great time together. But for obvious reasons, this was not a sight anyone expected to see.

While they are definitely an odd pairing due to political differences, it actually enraged fans to see them hitting it off.

And they did not hold back their criticisms on Twitter.

While some fans tried to defend Ellen and George's unexpected friendship, not everybody saw it as a positive thing.

This person pointed out that George Bush doesn't believe in gay marriage, and as you probably already know, Ellen is a member of the LGBTQ community and is married to a woman.

Fans seemed the most frustrated that Ellen could seem so friendly with somebody she knowingly has such different values than.

It's no secret that George Bush's political views are virtually against everything that Ellen is and believes in.

Ellen eventually took notice of the backlash from fans and decided to address the criticisms on her show.

She explained that she and her wife were invited to the Cowboys game by the daughter of the owner of the team, Jerry Jones.

She arrived to the suite where she was seated next to George Bush and his wife.

"I took a video of who was next to me," she said before playing a clip of George Bush smiling in the seat next to her.

"When we were invited, I was aware that I was going to be surrounded by people with very different views and beliefs," she said.

"During the game, they showed a shot of George and me laughing together, and uh — people were upset."

"They thought 'Why is a gay Hollywood liberal sitting next to a conservative republican president?'"

"Here's the thing," she went on. "I'm friends with George Bush. In fact, I'm friends with a lot of people who don't share the same beliefs that I have."

"We're all different and I think that we've forgotten that that's okay — that we're all different," she went on.

Many of Ellen's fans had a change of heart after her touching monologue, including many celebrities who voiced their support on Instagram.

"For instance, I wish people wouldn't wear fur. I don’t like it, but I’m friends with people who wear fur," Ellen continued her speech.

"And I'm friends with people who are furry, as a matter of fact."

"But just because I don’t agree with someone on everything doesn’t mean that I’m not going to be friends with them," she said.

"When I say be kind to one another, I don’t mean only the people that think the same way that you do."

Lenny Kravitz took this opportunity to not only support Ellen's message, but advertise his music. Well played, Lenny.

Some fans, however, still don't quite approve of Ellen's friendship with George, and can't believe that so many celebrities are on board with it.

This person tweeted in shock at the number of celebrities on Ellen and George's side.

I guess fans weren't expecting for Ellen to rally up so much support after just one monologue.

Many fans think that the only reason celebrities are able to see Ellen's point of view and understand it is because they're rich, and therefore privileged.

Money and privilege do go hand-in-hand.

This fan pointed out that the same celebrities who claim they don't support LGBTQ oppression, like Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Garner, seem awfully supportive of Ellen accepting George Bush as a friend.
