Ellen DeGeneres Faced Criticism For Sitting Next To George W. Bush

Ellen Degeneres and George W. Bush sat next to each other at an NFL game yesterday and the internet has some thoughts about this unlikely pair!

If you caught last night's NFL game: Dallas Cowboys vs Green Bay Packers, you may have also caught a glimpse of TV personality, Ellen DeGeneres.

This wouldn't have struck people as out of the ordinary if she weren't seated right next to former President of the United States, George W. Bush.

According to USA Today, during the Fox broadcast, the camera panned over to a suite where George and Ellen were seated with their respective wives.

The clip very quickly circulated the web, inevitably becoming a meme.

Let's just say people had some very interesting and mixed feelings about Ellen and her wife, Portia de Rossi, seemingly being on a double date with George W. Bush and former first lady, Laura Bush.

Admittedly, it is an odd pairing.

This isn't the first time Ellen and George have crossed paths, however.

Surprisingly enough, he was a guest on The Ellen Degeneres Show back in 2017. The pair seem to hit it off without a hitch.

He and Ellen even danced together for a moment as he walked into the set.

Watching the 43rd president of the U.S. and Ellen Degeneres cut-a-rug on daytime television is really not something I ever expected to see in my lifetime.

Anyway, considering the pair are already well-acquainted with each other, they probably didn't expect such a big reaction from fans for simply being seated beside each other at a football game.

But Twitter went off.

For the most part, people were outraged that Ellen would be associating herself with George Bush for obvious political differences.

They definitely seem like two people who would never be friends, tbh!

This person tweeted at Ellen, asking her what she and George talked about while they were sitting in the stands together.

They pointed out that George's values don't exactly align with Ellen's.

While some people tried to defend Ellen and George for getting along, not everybody saw it as a positive thing.

This person pointed out that George Bush didn't agree with gay marriage, and as we all know, Ellen is married to a woman.

Some people didn't think they would ever see the day Ellen Degeneres, George Bush, and their wives would be at any kind of event together.

Not going to lie, same.

Others were seriously having a hard time wrapping their heads around how Ellen could even be civil to the former president, let alone friendly.

This person alleged that George once said gay marriage leads to bestiality — something Ellen would surely not condone.

This fan warned Ellen that she would probably be "canceled" for fraternizing with George Bush.

Ellen has already had George as a guest on her show. If that didn't cancel her, I don't think this will either.

This person brought up a very good point that, shockingly, no one had asked yet:

Is it possible that they did not plan to be seated next to each other, and it's just a freakish coincidence? Food for thought.

Others think that the pair being friends watching a football game together is actually a good thing!

On the bright side, at least everybody is getting along, amirite?

Ellen quickly caught wind of the controversy, and it didn't take long for her to address it on her show.

She explained that she and Portia were invited to watch the game by Charlotte Jones, daughter of Jerry Jones, who owns the Cowboys.

"We went because we wanted to keep up with the Joneses," she joked.

She found herself sitting in a "fancy suite with fancy friends," and then shared a video clip of her view from her seats.

She panned the camera around until it eventually landed on a smiling Geroge W. Bush.

"During the game they showed a shot of Geroge and me laughing together," she said.

"People were upset. They thought, 'Why is a gay Hollywood liberal sitting next to a conservative republican president'?"

“I’m friends with George Bush," she explained.

"In fact, I’m friends with a lot of people who don’t share the same beliefs that I have. We’re all different and I think we’ve forgotten that that’s okay that we’re all different.”

She went on to explain that it's okay to be friends with people who don't share the same beliefs as you.

"I don’t like it, but I’m friends with people who wear fur. And I’m friends with people who are furry, as a matter of fact. But just because I don’t agree with someone on everything doesn’t mean that I’m not going to be friends with them," she went on.

(Ellen is good friends with J-Lo, who has been known to wear real fur).

"When I say be kind to one another, I don’t mean only the people that think the same way that you do."

"I mean be kind to everyone. It doesn’t matter."

"Even people who are already playing Christmas music."

"There’s no excuse for that, but I’m kind to them," she joked.

Let us know what you think of Ellen Degeneres, George Bush, and their wives sitting together at last night's Cowboys vs. Packers game!

Do you think they're actually friends? Or is it possible their tickets just happened to be seated beside each other?
