Nature runs deeply even in the cutest, cuddliest domesticated animals. Instincts are the voices our furry companions can't tune out and won't be denied.
We got a pretty epic reminder of that from a housecat recently when it was left for an overnight stay at a pet hotel that got a little bit frisky.
Mr. and Mrs. Zhao of Guangdong left their Russian Blue named Xiaopi for one evening, and it was anything but a restful night for the tomcat.
The next morning, he was so exhausted and worn out he had to be put on a glucose drip, The Mirror reported.
"I thought they’d be professional, but the staff member didn’t feed him during the day, and let him out to roam freely at night," Mr. Zhao said.
It's unclear what they thought the cats would do once they were left to their own devices.
"Between around 10.40pm and 5am, my cat mated with five female cats! And those are only the ones I could see in the CCTV footage," Mr. Zhao said.
As he said, "And the pet hotel had the nerve to be upset with me, saying some of the cat owners weren’t planning on having kittens. They wanted me to explain the situation to all the other owners."
But the hotel staff changed their tune after they were apparently reminded of something Mr. Zhao had already told them.
The hotel has apologized, offering to pay for Xiaopi's fluid therapy and will compensate the owners of the other cats if they have kittens.
"The other owners have also told me they’ll either give me a kitten or £113 (1,000 RMB) if their cats really turn out to be pregnant," he said.
That's because kittens of pedigreed Russian Blues can be worth over £1,000 ($1,200 U.S.).
