Canadians Get 'Transformers' Coins That Actually Kind Of Transform

Okay, so coin collecting is not exactly a booming hobby. In fact, I don't know any even amateur numismatics, let alone anybody who dedicates their lives to chasing down rare and interesting pocket change. It's probably becoming even more rare in an increasingly cashless society.

What I do know is that we all like to find cool things in the change we get back after buying a coffee. Consider yourself all kinds of lucky if you find something like this in your change.

Those lucky canucks have some sweet new coins that just ooze with Saturday morning nostalgia.

Optimus Prime is back, in coin form, thanks to the Royal Canadian Mint, and he actually gets to do some transforming. Sort of.

There are actually two different coins bearing the Autobot leader's iconic image.

Royal Canadian Mint

One is a 3D lenticular design that shows Prime shifting from his big rig form into his robot form. The mint ran off 25,000 of these coins, and they retail for $34.95 CAD (about $26 U.S.).

The other one is pure silver, and it's much rarer.

Both of which account for its much higher price of $159.95 CAD (about $120 U.S.). But check it out: the Cybertron style lettering, Prime's head, and the eyes that glow in the dark. It's a beauty.

They're pretty much a must-have for Transformers fans.

Even though, because they're not cars, if they were actual Transformers they'd be Decepticons.

Also, fun fact: Peter Cullen, who voices Optimus Prime, is Canadian.

So, which one do you like best?
