McDonald's Has Blueberry McGriddles In Mind For The Future Of Breakfast

McDonald's became a household name on the basis of a few signature menu items that you can always count on them offering — it's unlikely there will ever be a McDonald's without the Big Mac, after all. But that doesn't stop the Golden Arches from trying to innovate.

Some of their attempts have been successful, and some have been decided duds, but they keep trying to find the things we want to eat, and that takes some experimentation.

There's a big experiment going on right now, and it's worth paying attention to.

If you're in the Washington, DC area, you might even be in luck and able to try the salty-sweet combo Ronald and company are looking at adding to the breakfast menu: Blueberry McGriddle sandwiches.

That's right, they're putting blueberries in their already dense McGriddles.

And it's kind of surprising that is has taken so long. McGriddles made it onto the menu back in 2003 as little syrup-infused pancake sandwiches — it seems only natural that they would eventually add things like blueberries or chocolate chips, don't you think?

Anyway, those lucky folks in the DC area get to try three different variations on the blueberry McGriddle.

You can get it with sausage, egg, and cheese; bacon, egg, and cheese; or just sausage. A spokesperson for McDonald's said that customers have been "looking for a more craveable breakfast option on the go," and this seems to fit the bill.

Obviously as a test, they're only available for a limited time.

"With the testing of Blueberry McGriddles®, we are building a better McDonald’s by fulfilling our customers’ desires for a little indulgence at breakfast. We’re excited for our local customers to have the first chance and opportunity to test the limited time only Blueberry McGriddles® sandwich and to hearing our customers’ response to this sweet and savory breakfast sandwich," said area franchisee Carlos Mateos Jr. in a press release.
