Man Spends Three Years Turning His Yard Into A Gorgeous Natural Swimming Pool

Kasia M 16 May 2019

Ladies and gentleman summer is coming and I'm such a sucker for swimming and a beach. So when I heard about this man who embarked on a long project to build a natural swim pond in his own backyard I was all over it.

I mean how cool is that? I would love to have that on my future property. So let's check out how it all came about.

This man, known as Imgur user power-cube, decided that he wanted to try to build a natural swim pond in front of his house.

Here's the original area where the pond would eventually be built.

This was the rough idea of where everything would go in the project.

The placement of things changed over time, but this gives you the overall idea of the design.

This project required excavation to be done to the area.

Here's the rough excavation of the swimming hole end and the drop-in where the waterfall ended up. Quite the endeavour.

Once the excavation was completed the area was filled up with a heavy duty pond liner to prevent water seep rate over time.

This was a good idea.

Then, of course, to make the pond realistic you need some sand.

In this case, it was 60 tons. Wow! His wife and son helped to distribute it all over.

And every natural pond needs some stones, so 70 tons of river stone was brought in.

The stones came in three sizes: large, bear claws and eggs, and some pea gravel. Impressive!

The next step was to add flagstone flats to each of the steps of the waterfall.

No wonder this project took about three years. Holy crap! That's a long time.

Once the swim hole was roughed in, now was the time to install the pump system.

This took some trial and error but worked out in the end.

And here's where the piping had to go to push the water up to the waterfall.

I can't believe people undertake such elaborate projects all on their own.

Once all the water got filled in and all the kinks were worked out, there was time for some other special touches like steps and landscaping.

Now it's looking good!

A good tip is to buy your landscaping bits on eBay as he was able to buy cattail roots for $2 bucks each and planted 50 of them.

And then he also bought some weeping willow on eBay which grew like crazy to create this amazing natural feel for the entire pond.

This is truly amazing.

I mean, who needs a vacation from this? Wow, I have to say I'm super impressed.

He even added some low voltage LED lights that turn on at dusk to create an awesome ambiance.

It's the perfect place to relax in the evening with your dogs.
