This Couple's '80s-Inspired Engagement Photos Are A Total Time Warp

There are a a number of traditions involved in getting married. From the ring and proposal, to the showers and bachelor parties. And photo-ops. There are a lot of photo-ops.

One couple in Fort Wayne, Indiana, turned to photographer Matt Dutiel to make their engagement announcement a little more interesting.

For some couples, the traditions are part of what makes the whole thing special. For others, they can feel a bit, well, traditional.

Rose Collins and John Martin describe themselves as fun-loving and happy to go against the grain.

In fact, it was Rose who proposed to John.

Which is a growing trend that I am totally in favor of. Both because it gives women the autonomy to go for it instead of waiting and because it lessens the expectations placed on men to foot the bill for the perfect proposal.

John certainly didn't seem to mind Rose taking the lead.

They'd been dating for three and a half years and John immediately accepted.

Rose told BuzzFeed: "He squealed, 'Oh my god, yes.'".

Unsurprisingly, Rose and John were open to having a bit of fun with all the traditions.

So when she came across a Reddit post where someone shared their parents' engagement photos from the '80s, Rose showed them to John.

She asked him if he wanted to create something similar to send to their families.

John was totally into it, she told BuzzFeed: "His response was 'f*** yes, we are doing that.'".

They already had plans to visit their photographer friend, Matt in Florida.

When they told him their idea, he was completely sold on it and they hatched their plans. Using a combination of Goodwill and Amazon, they collected the perfect outfits and props.

They even utilized some old-school photography effects.

There was a time when adding a vignette in the corner was the height of photographic style. You paid extra for that at the department store photo studio!

Seriously, though, if it weren't for the clarity of the image, I'd swear these were taken in 1985.

In fact, I think my parents' engagement pics may have been almost identical to these, right down to the mustache. It's eerie.

As for the couple, they're just delighted to have found a partner with the same sense of humor.
